Windsor Castle

Castle

Today we went took the train to Windsor and toured the (Windsor) castle. Have you ever heard the phrase or a variation of the phrase  ”money making money”? To me Windsor castle is an example of money costing money. By this I mean all of the luxuries, art, and treasures seem to cost a fortune to own and maintain. That of course if fueled by historical preservation (which has merit) and the pageantry of royalty (not to keen on). That aside, the priceless treasures are amazing in their historical value. The arms, art, housewares, furniture, clothing, architecture and many more things. It have been an amazing opportunity to come see this living part of history. Picture were not allowed inside the castle unfortunately.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen

After the castle, in search of delicious food, we stumbled into a more unlikely joint called the Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK). What makes this place unlikely is while on traveling we tent to avoid places the serve food from home. So a burger joint was not the top of my list. As many of you know I do not consider a good burger a crowning achievement for an American restraunt. A good burger is like having clean bath rooms, it is baseline expectations. Similarly I do not travel abroad to have a burger, we do burgers the best in the U.S.

What we found at GBK was a delicious burger based on naturally fed beef. Coupled with some fries (chips) and a Chocolate Milk shake, and you had a smashing lunch.

Also, while at GBK, Amy and I realized the British Sterling Pound monetary system has too many coins. Amy could not figure out how some of them worked and I just took a picture.

Less Eventful Rest of the Day

Ater lunch we did a little bit of shopping in the touristy mall area next to the train station. After an some uneventful shopping we headed back to the hotel for some relaxing before dinner. After having enjoyed Nando’s in Maryland and seeing a location on our way to the hotel when we arrived, we decided we would have to eat during our visit here. So we hit Nando’s for some spicy Peri-Peri chicken. We topped off the meal with spicy chicken with some sweet and smooth Carmel Cheesecake.

I heart Culver’s!

Those of you that know me, know my love for Culver's

There is absolutely nothing like a $4.89 kids meal that comes with a full size burger (everything on it please), crinkle-cut fries, a soda, and a cup of fudge or caramel topped custard to top it off.  Mmmmm.  My mouth is watering now.

We’re heading there for dinner tonight and I can hardly wait!  It’s been almost 3 weeks since we’ve last eaten at the delicious (and economically priced) Culver’s!

What is your favorite restaurant?  Do you have a standard menu item that you order every time? or do you vary it up?

Backpacking Menu

The food Polly and I put together for the weekend was a huge success so I thought I would share our menu:

Breakfasts one and two: Quick 1 min oatmeal with brown sugar. Green tea.

Lunch one: Bagels and cream cheese, beef jerky, home mixed trail mix (cashews, honey roasted peanuts, banana chips, m&ms, yogurt covered raisins), fresh oranges

Dinner one: 2 cups instant rice, 1 can cream of celery soup, 1 can cream of chicken soup, 1 large foil packet of precooked/diced chicken- all mixed together and heated through and a little later the boys also made instant 4 cheese potatoes, instant gravy, and another packet of chicken.

Lunch two: Hard salami, pepperjack cheese, wheat thins, and bacon cheddar squeezy cheese from a can. Fresh oranges, velveeta shells and cheese, and more trail mix.

Dinner two: McCormick Zesty Italian Marinara sauce packet (add a can of tomato paste), whole wheat noodles, whole grain artisan bread- warmed on a rock by the fire.

Snacks throughout the trip (and breakfast three): Various flavored granola bars, trail mix, fresh apples and oranges, s’mores, kettlecorn, hot chocolate, propel flavor packets for water, and a few other things I can’t remember right now.

The food was a bit heavy but oh so delicious and worth every pound carried.  We ate a good portion of it and didn’t come back with too many extras…  Now I’ll just need to find a few new meal ideas for the next trip!!!

Watch Food, Inc.

The way you eat and shop for food will change. I am in total disgust over the food market in the US. I will be striving to buy more organics and to find meats that are not being raised and slaughtered in the ways shown in the movie.

PS If you have Netflix you can watch it on demand. I used my Wii this morning to watch it :-)
