Kekekabic Trail Guide 2011

While Nathan and I were in London he received an email from the Kekekabic Trail Association.  They were wondering if they could use one of the pictures Nathan took on our October 2010 Kekekabic Trail through hike.  Of course the answer was  yes!  So without further ado, here is Nathan’s handiwork on the cover of the new Kekekabic Trail Guide.  (Nathan’s picture (right) features Kevin, Tone, Amy)

Border Route Trail

67 miles of back-country backpacking fun!

Tuesday this week Amy, Kevin, Tony, and I completed backpacking the Border Route Trail (BRT). The BRT is a 67 mile trail that runs along the Minnesota and Canada border. We completed the trek over 5 days of hiking. Around this same time last year we backpacked the Kekakabic trail which is about 43 miles. The BRT’s 67 miles equates to a whopping 56% increase in distance over the same amount of time. It was a fairly grueling amount of work as our schedule was wake up, pack up, hike, setup, and then back to sleep. By the time we reached camp there was pretty much energy to make dinner and go to bed. It was a great trip though. We all had a good time together and enjoyed great conversation. On top of that, God blessed us all with the strength, safe travel, and great weather. All said and done we have no complaints.

Mentioned on TwinCities.com

I am not certain on the whole backstory, Amy can fill us in on that, but we along with Kevin and Tony were mentioned on TwinCities.com in regards to our Fall 2010 hike of the Kekekabic trail in the BWCA. They even used one of my sweet pictures of a lake near Thomas Lake. Based off the author’s comments I think he really like the picture.

Memorial Day Backpacking

This Memorial Day weekend Amy, Kevin, Nick, Scotty and I had a great time backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). We hiked from Cook County road 4 in Lutsen to the Gun Flint trail in Grand Marais. Despite the 40 degree weather and the rain we had a great time. We knocked out about 28.5 miles between Friday night and Monday morning. Along the way my pack took a roughly 100′ foot fall off of a water fall. By the grace of God my pack did not get carried off into the raging Cascade river that the water fall met up with at the base of the fall. Also by the grace of God my pack was not water logged. In fact the only damage was a broken Camelback valve and a bent camp saw (which was fixed in minutes). 100′ foot fall off a water fall and the only damage was a $5-$10 water valve. Praise the Lord! As to how this happened the details are a bit sketchy. The short story is this: I set my pack down near the fall where you would consider such a valuable “safe”. Loose dirt/Pine needles though created a perfect storm in conjunction with my desire to get a sweet picture of the water fall that led to the pack’s very stealth like movement off the edge of the fall. All in all it was a great experience though as the five of us took a sweet hike through an area we would have never hiked and got a view of the fall few have probablby even ever seen as you could not canoe to where we were and there was nothing that even resembled a hiking trail to get there. It was a short 45 minute detour that gave us an opportunity to see more than we would have had I been responsible with my pack, hehehehe.

“You could combine the sang Grillz and I’m On A Boat and have a wicked song!” – Amy [Spoken as we saw a boat going down the interstate with a grill in it.]
