This Memorial Day weekend Amy, Kevin, Nick, Scotty and I had a great time backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). We hiked from Cook County road 4 in Lutsen to the Gun Flint trail in Grand Marais. Despite the 40 degree weather and the rain we had a great time. We knocked out about 28.5 miles between Friday night and Monday morning. Along the way my pack took a roughly 100′ foot fall off of a water fall. By the grace of God my pack did not get carried off into the raging Cascade river that the water fall met up with at the base of the fall. Also by the grace of God my pack was not water logged. In fact the only damage was a broken Camelback valve and a bent camp saw (which was fixed in minutes). 100′ foot fall off a water fall and the only damage was a $5-$10 water valve. Praise the Lord! As to how this happened the details are a bit sketchy. The short story is this: I set my pack down near the fall where you would consider such a valuable “safe”. Loose dirt/Pine needles though created a perfect storm in conjunction with my desire to get a sweet picture of the water fall that led to the pack’s very stealth like movement off the edge of the fall. All in all it was a great experience though as the five of us took a sweet hike through an area we would have never hiked and got a view of the fall few have probablby even ever seen as you could not canoe to where we were and there was nothing that even resembled a hiking trail to get there. It was a short 45 minute detour that gave us an opportunity to see more than we would have had I been responsible with my pack, hehehehe.
