Memorial Day Backpacking

This Memorial Day weekend Amy, Kevin, Nick, Scotty and I had a great time backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). We hiked from Cook County road 4 in Lutsen to the Gun Flint trail in Grand Marais. Despite the 40 degree weather and the rain we had a great time. We knocked out about 28.5 miles between Friday night and Monday morning. Along the way my pack took a roughly 100′ foot fall off of a water fall. By the grace of God my pack did not get carried off into the raging Cascade river that the water fall met up with at the base of the fall. Also by the grace of God my pack was not water logged. In fact the only damage was a broken Camelback valve and a bent camp saw (which was fixed in minutes). 100′ foot fall off a water fall and the only damage was a $5-$10 water valve. Praise the Lord! As to how this happened the details are a bit sketchy. The short story is this: I set my pack down near the fall where you would consider such a valuable “safe”. Loose dirt/Pine needles though created a perfect storm in conjunction with my desire to get a sweet picture of the water fall that led to the pack’s very stealth like movement off the edge of the fall. All in all it was a great experience though as the five of us took a sweet hike through an area we would have never hiked and got a view of the fall few have probablby even ever seen as you could not canoe to where we were and there was nothing that even resembled a hiking trail to get there. It was a short 45 minute detour that gave us an opportunity to see more than we would have had I been responsible with my pack, hehehehe.

Kick in the butt for me…

So lately I’ve found myself kind of slacking in the homework department. The teacher that taught my last two classes was kind of a softy when it came to grading and homework requirements; I got spoiled.

Now, to my great shame, I got a paper back today from my new teacher (who also happens to be the program head of my major) today and *gasp* I got a B, and not just a B, worse, a B-. *hangs head in shame*

I can’t believe I got a B-!!! But, after re-reading the paper and careful analysis, I realized I didn’t deserve any better of a grade than that. I procrastinated writing the paper until the last minute and my paper shows that.

After careful thought and consideration I realized though that all in all I am glad I got that B-. It has really encouraged me to get my butt in gear and really delve into my homework. I’m paying a lot of money for these classes and I really need to put in the extra work and effort to make sure that I get all that I possibly can from each and every class!

So thank you Prof for my B-, it did what nothing else could have done, it lit a fire under my bum :-)

Ezra Anand Hein is born!

Friday May 20, 2011 at 3:32p.m. our first nephew Ezra Anand Hein was born! He is 5lbs 8oz and 18.05″. He was born pre-term by 24 days but is currently alive and kicking. Amy and I had the chance to meet him and see the excited new parents through video chat that evening. It was awesome to be able to meet our nephew in real time via video, second only to actually being there.

Congratulations Timothy and Manju! (their blog)

Baby Hein is on his way!!!

Our nephew is on his way! Manju, Timothy’s wife (Timothy is Nathan’s oldest brother), started having contractions last night and went to the doctor this afternoon. She was dilated to a 5 so the doctor sent them on over to the hospital!!! Our nephew should be born sometime soon!

We are so incredibly excited and are praying very hard for them! We can hardly wait to see a picture and find out what his name will be :-)
